Sustainability

DKI Barclay Restorations is striving to make continuous positive changes for a sustainable future for younger generations.

We’re proud to be part of an in-office sustainability initiative aimed at creating a negative environmental footprint. Through partnerships with local companies, we ensure that plastics, containers, paper, and organic waste are responsibly sorted and recycled.

What truly sets this program apart is our innovative approach to handling non-recyclable materials.

Items that can’t be recycled are placed in a specialized “Waste to Energy” bin. These materials are then transported to Covanta, a cutting-edge energy recovery facility in Burnaby.

What Happens at Covanta?

At Covanta, waste is deposited into hoppers and moved into combustion chambers, where it’s incinerated at approximately 2000°F in a self-sustaining process. The heat generated turns water in steel-lined tubes into steam, which powers a turbine to generate electricity. This electricity is then supplied to local utilities—turning waste into a valuable energy resource.

To ensure environmental safety, all combustion areas are maintained under negative air pressure to control dust, odors, and emissions.

We Use Non-Toxic Green Products

We are also equally proud to be using not one but many nontoxic green products to create a better working environment for our staff and customers. Some of our products are completely green and a safer way of cleaning and killing germs.

Learn More About Our In-House Recycling Program

In the second episode of our two-part series on sustainability, we continue to look at how DKI Canada Members are leading the restoration industry with their commitment to reducing, reusing, and recycling. We speak with Laurie Dean, of DKI – Barclay Restorations, about their recycling efforts that are turning waste that can’t otherwise be repurposed, into electricity. We also speak with Andrew Feeney from DKI – Priority Restoration in Winnipeg, about EV research and how electric vehicles are the road to the future. Finally, we speak with Cara Clairman, CEO of Plug ‘n’ Drive, a non-profit focussed on promoting EV use, on some things to consider before going electric.
